How Kickstarter Works
I have received a lot of questions regarding Kickstarter and how it works. I thought I would put together a little information about it. If you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Kickstarter is a new way to fund creative projects. Together, creators (like us) and backers (like you) make projects happen. Project creators set a funding goal and deadline. If people like a project, they can pledge money to make it happen and become a backer. When backers make a pledge they get a chance to choose a reward related to the project, which makes it kind of fun. Initially, no money is taken from your account. It is just a pledge. Think back to those jog-a-thon days.
Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing — projects must reach their funding goals to receive any money. If the project doesn’t reach its goal, the pledges received are not redeemed. So if the Kickstarter campaign fails you don’t lose any money. If the campaign succeeds your pledge will be redeemed and the reward you chose will be sent to you. Your account will be charged the amount you pledged. All pledges are made on a secure site through Amazon.com.
Creators keep 100% ownership of their work. Backing a project is more than just giving someone money It’s supporting their dream to create something that they want to see exist in the world. For us, that dream is the Storybook Project: Mama has Cancer. This project is so near and dear to our hearts it doesn’t seem like work. It is meant to be a resource available to young mothers like us, diagnosed with a terrible disease, wondering how they are going to carry their families through the difficult times ahead. We want the Storybook to help mothers talk with their young children about a breast cancer diagnosis in a way that is engaging and meaningful.
